This recent article about farm safety education caught my attention. The Saskatchewan Safety Council/ SaskPower's Power Pac Program was out and about in my home town of Wakaw. The Power Pac Program educates children about the hazards around the farm and home. In fact 45,500 students have gone through the program every year since 2004! Wow- what a number.
There are many safety programs geared towards children today in Saskatchewan. The people delivering these programs leave a positive impact and I think they are the key to changing our culture's attitudes about safety.
When I look back to my childhood in small-town Saskatchewan, I can't recall any safety education programs. Perhaps the lack of my generation's safety education is part of the reason we have an unintentional injury epidemic going on today?
While this may be the case, my generation is certainly not helpless in this situation. We can control our own destiny in injury prevention and it is a conscious decision one makes every day. For example, I know I can assist with safety education in my family right now. The example I set as a dad is tremendously important as "walking the talk" is far more powerful than just "talking the talk". I think about this every day.
As a parent or grandparent, are you doing the same?
